How to File an Insurance Claim With State Farm

Being involved in a car accident is an emotionally charged experience. Even the most levelheaded drivers can find it difficult to think clearly in such a harrowing situation. However, proper documentation, from who was involved to what was damaged, is critical. Having this info for an accident can save you time, money, and hassle. Follow our step-by-step guide for what to do if you need to file an auto insurance claim with State Farm.

Be Prepared

No one wants to think an accident will happen to them, but you should always be prepared for the worst case scenario. Keep cones, roadside flares, and your emergency medical information in your car.

Immediately After an Accident

When you have been in an accident, you will want to make sure your mind is clear so you can be prepared for what happens next. Take the following steps:

  • Take a deep breath.
  • Check for injuries in your party and with the other driver. When in doubt, call 911.
  • If the accident is minor, move cars to the side of the road or out of traffic.
  • Turn on your vehicle’s hazard lights, and use cones, warning triangles, or flares for safety.
  • Even if the accident is minor, call the police to get an accident report.

Things to Keep in Mind:

  • Do not sign any document, unless it is for your insurance agent or a police officer.
  • Make notes about the accident, including witnesses, specific damages, etc.
  • If the name on an auto registration is different than the driver, jot down the relationship.
  • Be polite, but never admit fault – even if you think you were responsible.
  • Do not exaggerate or try to project blame. Tell only the facts, and only discuss the accident with the police and your insurance agent.
  • Do not leave the accident before the police officers do, if at all possible.

Reporting a Claim

Modern-day technology makes reporting a claim easy. You can do this by calling 800-STATE-FARM (800-782-8332) or by starting a claim online by logging into your policy. You may want to consider downloading State Farm’s Pocket Agent app. This makes it easy to file your claim from your phone. Here is what the agency has to say about it:

“If your auto policy is registered on statefarm.com, initiating a claim is just a few taps on your phone. Record the location, vehicle damage details, driver information and even take pictures of the accident with your [phone] camera to submit with your claim. Lost your insurance card? My Insurance Card will provide your policy information on the spot.”

One of the biggest advantages of the app is that you can cut out the middle man and have your estimate within hours instead of days. Once you report your claim, your claims adjuster will make note of the damages to the vehicle, as well as any injuries sustained by you or your passengers. Soon after, he or she may offer you an initial payment.

Case Resolution

Once an adjuster has made an estimate on the value of the repairs and injuries sustained, he or she will resolve your case by offering you payment or reimbursement for car repairs or medical bills. Make sure you keep all receipts from repair shops and copies of all hospital bills. The hospital can furnish you with detailed copies of these bills if you need them.

If you are having trouble getting an insurance company to pay for your claim, you may want to consider hiring an attorney to expedite the process. Sometimes even the act of hiring counsel can lead to a faster check for repairs.
